Admissions Interviews

Interviews or selection days are required for BSc Nursing, MSc Pre-registration Nursing, BSc Social Work, BA Social Work, all PGCE programmes, BA Primary Education with QTS, and BA Social Work and Social Policy. Some creative arts programmes hold portfolio reviews or auditions rather than traditional interviews. MBA applicants attend an interview following initial application screening.

Other undergraduate programmes do not routinely interview; decisions are based on UCAS applications alone. If you are uncertain whether your course requires an interview, check the course page or contact [email protected].

Nursing and social work interviews assess values alignment with NHS and Social Work England standards, communication skills, and understanding of the profession. Expect scenario-based questions, group discussions and possibly a written exercise. PGCE interviews include a subject knowledge task, a short teaching presentation and questions about school experience.

Interviews typically last 30–60 minutes and are conducted by academic staff and practising professionals. They may take place on campus, at partner NHS trusts or schools, or online via video call for applicants unable to travel. You will receive detailed instructions including date, format and any preparation required when invited.

Research current issues affecting your profession—NHS workforce challenges for nursing applicants, SEND provision for teacher training candidates, or recent Social Work England guidance for social work. Reflect on relevant work experience, volunteering or personal circumstances that demonstrate resilience, empathy and commitment.

Dress smartly unless advised otherwise. Arrive fifteen minutes early for in-person interviews; test your technology in advance for online sessions. You may bring notes but should speak naturally rather than reading prepared answers. Interviewers want to understand your motivation and suitability, not test obscure factual knowledge.

Decisions are usually communicated through UCAS or the postgraduate portal within two weeks of the interview. Successful candidates receive conditional offers subject to academic requirements, occupational health clearance and DBS checks where applicable. Unsuccessful applicants may request brief feedback by email, though detailed coaching is not provided.

If you cannot attend your allocated interview date, contact the admissions team immediately. Rescheduling is offered where possible but cannot be guaranteed during busy periods. Failure to attend without notice may result in withdrawal of the interview invitation.
