Student Support

Financial advice, academic support and guidance for students facing personal challenges.

Student Support Centre

The Student Support Centre in the Student Services building is the first point of contact for non-academic enquiries including finance, accommodation, visa compliance for international students and general welfare. Advisers provide guidance or refer you to specialist teams as appropriate.

Opening hours are Monday to Friday 09:00–17:00. Email [email protected] or telephone 01234 567802. Drop-in queues are longest at the start of term; book appointments through the portal where possible.

Financial support

Money advisers help with budgeting, understanding student finance and applying to the Student Support Fund for unexpected hardship. The fund provides non-repayable grants for costs such as emergency travel, essential equipment replacement and crisis accommodation.

Part-time work opportunities are listed on the careers portal. Advisers can discuss balancing employment hours with academic commitments and visa work restrictions for international students.

Academic support

Academic skills workshops cover essay writing, referencing, revision strategies and presentation skills. One-to-one tutorials with learning developers are available for students seeking personalised feedback on draft assignments.

Personal tutors in each programme provide academic guidance and pastoral signposting. Meet your personal tutor at least once per term to discuss progress and any concerns.

Support for specific groups

Dedicated advisers support care leavers, estranged students, students with caring responsibilities and those who are pregnant or student parents. Enhanced bursaries and flexible arrangements may apply.

The international student support team assists with visa queries, cultural adjustment and practical matters including bank accounts and council tax exemption letters.

Reporting concerns

Report harassment, hate incidents or safeguarding concerns through the online Report and Support tool, choosing anonymous or identified submission. Trained responders contact you within two working days if you provide contact details.

The university takes reports seriously and may initiate investigations under student conduct regulations or refer matters to external agencies where criminal behaviour is alleged.
