Students' Union

Luma Students' Union (NSU) represents all registered students, campaigning on issues affecting your experience and providing independent advice on academic appeals, disciplinary matters and housing disputes. Five full-time sabbatical officers—President, Education, Welfare, Activities and Diversity—are elected annually by student vote.

Course representatives in each programme gather feedback and attend staff-student liaison committees, ensuring your voice influences curriculum decisions, assessment practices and resource allocation. NSU publishes an annual report on issues raised and outcomes achieved.

The students' union building on campus houses a bar, café, shop and event spaces hosting live music, comedy nights, quiz evenings and themed parties throughout the year. The annual Summer Ball at a regional venue attracts over 800 students for formal dining and entertainment.

Welcome Week events organised by NSU include the Freshers' Fair, campus tours led by student ambassadors, and city orientation trips introducing new students to Luma's shops, restaurants and transport links.

NSU Advice is independent from the university and provides confidential guidance on housing contracts, employment rights, consumer issues and academic procedures. Advisers are trained by Citizens Advice and can accompany students to formal meetings where appropriate.

The Advice service also supports students experiencing difficulty with landlords in the private rented sector, which remains popular among second- and third-year students moving out of halls.

Student Council meets monthly to debate policy proposals and hold officers to account. Any student may submit a policy idea or attend council meetings as an observer. NSU employs over 200 student staff in roles including bar work, event stewarding and ambassador programmes.

Volunteering through NSU connects students with local charities, schools and community projects across the West Midlands. The annual RAG week raises thousands of pounds for nominated charities through sponsored events and challenges.
